As you now know, this site came about on my journey of exploring 52 exciting challenges, experiences, and personal growth activities over the course of this year, created as one of the ‘things’ I wanted to pursue. Two birds, one stone: I did a new thing, to document my new things! From bigger adventures like skydiving and climbing a crane, to relatable, calmer activities like learning new skills and meeting new people while pursuing new experiences, I’m on a mission to step out of the usual routine and live life with meaning.
This journey is about growth, adventure, and connection—so I’d love to bring you along for the ride! Whether you’re looking for inspiration, tips, or just curious about what I’ve done, I’ll be sharing my progress, lessons learned, and a few surprises along the way.
Take a look at my journey so far and find out how you can get involved or follow along. I’m also open to suggestions, so if you’ve got an activity or challenge in mind, feel free to share it with me!
Let’s make the most of this year, together!
Welcome to My Journey
Each week, I’m trying something new, learning, and growing. Let’s dive in!
Outsourcing
Hiring my first cleaner was a milestone moment. It wasn’t just about outsourcing housework; it was about giving myself permission to value my time. I’d put it off for ages, partly out of guilt, and partly because I wasn’t sure how to even start the process. But once I did, it felt empowering. Delegating this one task opened up more space for creativity, relaxation, and focus — a small change that created a ripple effect in how I manage my energy.
Open House
Attending my first open house was an exciting step toward a future goal. I went in thinking I’d just look, but I walked away with so much insight into the home-buying process. It was eye-opening to see the subtle details that can make or break a property and to imagine what kind of space I want to create for myself. It shifted home ownership from a vague dream to something I could start actively preparing for.
Karaoke
Karaoke was way more nerve-wracking than I expected, but also incredibly freeing. Getting up in front of people and singing (badly!) reminded me that you don’t have to be perfect to have fun. It was about letting go of judgment, being playful, and realizing that no one else is thinking about you as much as you think they are. And honestly, the laughter and cheering from the crowd made it worth every off-key note.
DnD
Playing Dungeons & Dragons for the first time was like stepping into another world. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I ended up loving the creativity and imagination it required. It was storytelling, strategy, teamwork, and problem-solving all rolled into one — plus, it gave me an opportunity to connect with people in a way that felt fun and collaborative. It reminded me how much joy there is in playing, even as an adult.
Kickboxing
Kickboxing kicked my ass in the best way. It was physically demanding and mentally invigorating. I walked in feeling a bit intimidated, but I walked out feeling strong and confident. It taught me how powerful movement can be, especially when it’s tied to something that makes you feel like a badass. Every punch, every combo helped me release stress, channel focus, and reconnect with my body.
Social Painting
Painting at Art with Love was a calming and fulfilling creative experience. I didn’t realize how soothing it would be to get lost in colors and brushstrokes. It wasn’t about being good at it — it was about slowing down and making something just because it felt good to do it. For a couple of hours, time melted away, and I got to enjoy the peacefulness of creating without pressure.
Toured the City Hall Clock Tower
The City Hall Clock Tower tour was surprisingly inspiring. Seeing the inner workings of such an old piece of architecture, hearing the history behind it, and then climbing to the top to take in the view — it made me feel connected to the city in a new way. It was a reminder that stories and beauty are hidden in plain sight if you’re willing to look up (literally and figuratively).
Moonwalking
Learning to moonwalk has been one of the most random but satisfying challenges. It’s trickier than it looks and took more practice than I expected. I started out stumbling and laughing at myself, but eventually I could glide across the floor with some confidence. The best part? It made me feel like a kid again — playing around, failing forward, and enjoying the weirdness of trying new things.
Piano
Picking up piano again felt both nostalgic and fresh. Each note is a puzzle piece, and putting them together takes focus, patience, and a surprising amount of self-compassion. I’ve always admired musicians, but now I have an even deeper respect for the process. It’s not just about technique — it’s about sticking with something even when it feels slow and trusting that progress adds up.
Roach Races
Roach races were absolutely bizarre — and completely hilarious. I went with zero expectations, and left with a smile plastered across my face. It was silly, a bit gross, and full of unexpected fun. Sometimes the weirdest things end up being the most memorable, and this was a reminder that joy often lives in the absurd.
Radio Speaker
Being interviewed on the radio pushed me way out of my comfort zone. Speaking live, knowing people were listening, made my heart race — but it also gave me a platform to share part of my journey. It taught me the power of voice and vulnerability, and how valuable it can be to share your experiences even when it’s scary.
Rifle Shooting
Rifle shooting was a mix of adrenaline and focus. Handling something that powerful made me hyper-aware of safety and control, but also left me feeling capable and calm under pressure. I learned how much discipline it takes to be precise — and how much respect I have for people who do this with skill.
Japanese Mini Garden Workshop
This workshop was like a meditative retreat. Assembling the tiny garden felt soothing and intentional. Every rock, plant, and piece had a purpose. I left feeling centered, grounded, and inspired to create more peace and balance in my surroundings. There’s something incredibly powerful about slowing down to build something small and beautiful.
Improv Theatre
Improv theatre was as terrifying as it was thrilling. I had to let go of control, trust my instincts, and react in the moment. It was messy, unpredictable, and wildly fun. The best part? There’s no right or wrong — just being present and playful. It reminded me that sometimes the best things happen when you stop planning and just respond to the world as it is.
Random Tarp Waterslide + Hill Roll
This activity was pure chaotic joy. There’s something special about getting messy, doing something ridiculous, and laughing with people who don’t take themselves too seriously. Sliding down a hill on a tarp might sound silly, but it was one of the most carefree moments I’ve had in ages.
Skateboarding
Learning to skateboard has been humbling. It’s a lot of falling, wobbling, and laughing at yourself. But there’s nothing quite like the feeling of rolling forward for the first time and thinking, “I’m actually doing it.” It’s about resilience and fun and learning to take small wins as they come.
Juggling
Juggling is one of those things that looks impossible until you try it — and then it’s just difficult and funny. I dropped the balls a hundred times, but that made every small success feel even better. It was a lesson in rhythm, focus, and letting go of frustration in favor of play.
Pool
Playing pool was a laid-back experience that allowed me to relax and unwind with friends after a busy period. It reminded me that not all challenges need to be intense and that sometimes, it’s about enjoying the simple pleasures in life. There was something grounding about the relaxed atmosphere, where the focus wasn’t on competition but on connection and having fun in the moment. It was a reminder to balance hard work with moments of ease and leisure.
Salsa
Salsa dancing at Sound Garden was an exhilarating experience! The energy of the crowd, the rhythmic beats, and the freedom of movement pushed me to be more confident in my body. I had to step out of my comfort zone and let go of any self-consciousness, which felt liberating. Dancing in a social setting brought a sense of connection with others that transcended words, and it was exciting to be part of something so dynamic and alive. It was a beautiful reminder of the joy that comes from simply enjoying the music and the moment.
Resin Cutting Board
Creating a resin cutting board was a hands-on and creative process that challenged my craftsmanship and attention to detail. The combination of choosing the right colors, pouring the resin, and waiting for the board to set was a rewarding journey. As I saw the project come together, I realized how much patience and precision were required, and I felt proud of the final product. This experience reinforced the value of taking time with each step, focusing on the quality of the process rather than rushing to the end result.
King Island Walk Over
Walking over King Island was lovely. The scenery was serene, and completing the short walk to the island provided a sense of accomplishment. I found myself feeling more connected to nature and appreciative of its beauty. The experience was not just a physical one but also a reminder of the power of the tides (you could get stuck there if you don’t time it correctly!), as well as the quiet joy that comes from being fully immersed in the natural world.
Contacted Mortgage Brokers
Contacting mortgage brokers was an important step in my journey toward homeownership. It was an eye-opening experience, as it provided me with a deeper understanding of the financial side of real estate and the various factors that play into securing a mortgage. I realized how crucial it is to plan and educate myself on the financial process when making significant life decisions like buying a home. It also taught me the importance of patience, as navigating these kinds of steps often requires time and careful consideration.
Comedy Shows
Attending comedy shows was an incredibly fun and uplifting experience. The humour, the timing, and the atmosphere were perfect for helping me unwind and take a break from the usual demands of life. It reminded me how important laughter is for the soul and how comedy can bring people together, creating a light-hearted sense of connection. It was a refreshing reminder to not take things too seriously and to embrace moments of joy and fun whenever they come along.
Bachata Dancing
Attending bachata classes gave me the chance to connect with others through movement in a way that felt both liberating and empowering. Whether it was learning new steps, improving my technique, or simply letting go of the day-to-day stresses, dancing provided an opportunity to focus on the present moment. It allowed me to have fun, meet new people, and feel like I was part of something bigger. The combination of physical activity and social interaction made for an energizing and fulfilling experience.
Self-Published My Prompt Journal
Self-publishing my prompt journal was an exciting and fulfilling achievement that marked the culmination of months of work and creativity. It was a journey of bringing an idea to life, from concept to final product. The satisfaction of seeing something I had envisioned come to fruition was immense, and it gave me a boost of confidence to continue pursuing my creative ideas. It also reminded me that sometimes the hardest part is simply starting, and that perseverance and belief in my work would pay off in the end.
Conference, on a Yacht, in an Industry I Don’t Work In
Attending the conference on a yacht was a unique and unexpected experience. Being immersed in an industry I don’t work in allowed me to think outside the box and gain new perspectives. The setting was luxurious, yet the discussions and networking opportunities were incredibly valuable. I came away with fresh insights and a greater appreciation for the diverse ways people approach their work and their industries. It was a reminder to remain open to new ideas and opportunities, even if they are outside my usual scope of interest.
Geocaching
Geocaching was an adventurous treasure hunt that pushed me to explore new areas and challenge my problem-solving skills. As I searched for hidden caches, I discovered new trials I hadn’t noticed before, and the sense of it being like a scavenger hunt was thrilling. It combined outdoor exploration with a sense of playfulness, turning a simple walk into an adventure. Geocaching reminded me of the joys of exploration and how even the most ordinary places can hold hidden surprises if we take the time to look.
Hot Air Balloon
The hot air balloon ride was a peaceful experience that gave me a completely new perspective on the world below, and it was over before I knew it. Floating in the sky, I felt a sense of tranquility and awe at the vastness of the landscape. It was a powerful reminder to take moments for stillness and reflection, and to recognize the importance of pausing in our fast-paced lives.
SICK
I wouldn’t consider this a new thing, but I’d like to touch on it. I’m hugely driven by accomplishment and movement, as I know many of you may be. I wanted to remind everyone that pausing and recovering is VITAL. Honestly, being sick is always a challenging and humbling reminder of the importance of taking care of my health. It forces me to slow down and focus on recovery, which is difficult when there feels like so much to do. This period of rest made me more aware of how easily we overlook our well-being in the pursuit of other goals. It taught me the value of being kinder to myself when I’m not feeling my best, and how essential it is to allow space for recovery and self-care.
Extra in Film
Being an extra in a film was a fascinating and fun experience that gave me a peek behind the scenes of movie-making. I was an office worker being handed some papers, but that’s not the point of this or why I chose to do it. I wanted to understand a new perspective and learn! It was exciting to see how all the different elements come together to create a story. I loved being part of something creative, even if it was in a small, behind-the-scenes capacity. The whole experience was a reminder of the magic of film and storytelling, and how being part of a team effort can contribute to something bigger than myself.
Harry Potter Orchestra
Watching the Harry Potter Orchestra was a magical and unforgettable experience. As the iconic music filled the venue, I felt deeply connected to the beloved world of Harry Potter. The energy of the orchestra and the excitement of hearing such a recognizable score live was exhilarating. It was a celebration of creativity, nostalgia, and the power of music to transport us to different worlds. Being in the audience for this performance was a truly enchanting experience!
